As I grew up fulfilling the role of a peacemaker in the family, the go to person for my friends when in need, advice giver to my peers, I was insightful enough as to which helping profession I wanted to choose. Live up to that dream of reaching out to people in need, extending a warm helping hand towards them and leave on the journey of discovering my inner self.
Mental health is as important as physical health and according to the Mental Health Atlas-2011 (WHO) the ratio of mental health professionals to the Indian population is 3.26 per 1,00,000. Scary enough!!
Today, as a practicing counsellor, I have worked with number of patients to understand the intricacies of psychological issues they face. My work revolves around adopting open and flexible approach towards clients yet give them structured therapy sessions. I believe ‘counselling is not about giving control of your life to an expert, but taking the wheel of your life in own hands and becoming experts yourself.’ Thus, I consider clients equal and engage in collaborative process. I help clients to help themselves, so that they are better off in the outside world without getting dependent. I follow ethical considerations like confidentiality, informed consent etc which are cornerstones of the profession. To keep myself at mental peace, I also seek personal therapy and I know how it feels to be on the other side as well. I have a supervisor, with whom I discuss cases (without disclosing the identities) to improve at my services.
I will put my best foot forward to help you all to deal with unfinished businesses of the past and present, to open the door to a confident and brighter future.
